Lake Monticello is a private 3,500 acre community 15 miles east of Charlottesville containing 4,599 lots with 15 condominium units and 4,100 homes presently. The population is approximately 15,300. The 350 acre lake is manmade, fed by some 200 springs and has 22.5 miles of shoreline. Home sites are connected by 59 miles of roads and served by a central water and sewage system. All utilities, including telephone, electric and cable television are underground. The community has a volunteer fir department and rescue squad and is patrolled twenty-four hours a day by the Monticello Police Department. Access to Lake Monticello is limited to property owners and tentants; their family members and guest; and authorized groups for special activities. The lake is ideal for boating, skiing, swimming, and fishing. There is a marina with docks and a concrete launching area to serve boaters. There are five beaches with picnic areas. Other recreation facilities include a swimming pool, softball and soccer fields, tennis and basket ball courts and playgrounds.
